{"id":918,"date":"2026-09-07T05:19:53","date_gmt":"2026-09-07T05:19:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unigine.com\/blog\/?p=918"},"modified":"2026-09-08T08:52:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T08:52:32","slug":"railway-simulators-are-not-maps-they-are-kilometers-long-corridors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unigine.com\/blog\/2026\/09\/07\/railway-simulators-are-not-maps-they-are-kilometers-long-corridors\/","title":{"rendered":"Railway Simulators Are Not Maps \u2014 They Are Kilometers-Long Corridors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/unigine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/EN-LNFB-Rail-transport-1.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical railway simulation scene may be only a few hundred meters wide \u2014 but it can stretch for <strong>hundreds or even thousands of kilometers along the track<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNIGINE 2 Sim powers many railway training systems around the world: simulators for <strong>passenger and freight train drivers, metro and tram operators, monorail systems<\/strong>, as well as platforms used for <strong>rolling stock maintenance and diagnostics training<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>478 km.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the length of the <strong>longest straight railway track in the world<\/strong> \u2014 a section of the <strong>Trans-Australian Railway<\/strong> crossing the Nullarbor Plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simulating infrastructure at that scale requires an engine designed for <strong>large coordinate spaces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNIGINE uses <strong>64-bit world coordinates (double precision)<\/strong>, allowing stable simulation of environments spanning thousands of kilometers. Many real-time engines \u2014 for example Unity \u2014 rely on 32-bit coordinates and require workarounds to handle worlds of that size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But real railways are not just long tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical railway is a <strong>complex network of routes, switches, stations, depots, and signalling systems<\/strong>. Training simulators therefore need tools that allow instructors to adapt the environment to a <strong>specific railway network or operational scenario<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where <strong>track builders and scenario editors<\/strong> become essential. They allow training centers to recreate real infrastructure and design custom training situations for their operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another important aspect is the <strong>vertical track profile<\/strong>. Unlike cars, trains cannot climb steep gradients easily, so elevation changes and slope limits must be modeled accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these tools have been developed by our customers using <strong>extensions for the UNIGINE Editor<\/strong>, which provides a flexible foundation for building custom simulation workflows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Railway simulators help operators train for situations that are difficult \u2014 or unsafe \u2014 to reproduce in real life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>obstacles appearing on the track<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>extreme weather conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>handling heavy freight trains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>working with signalling and dispatch systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another surprising fact: <strong>trains cannot stop quickly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A passenger train traveling at <strong>~200 km\/h<\/strong> may require <strong>2\u20133.5 km to come to a full stop<\/strong>, while heavy freight trains may need <strong>1\u20132 km or more<\/strong> even at lower speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason is simple physics: <strong>steel wheels on steel rails<\/strong> provide far less friction than <strong>rubber tires on asphalt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weather can make things even harder. Rain, snow, ice \u2014 and even <strong>fallen leaves<\/strong> \u2014 can dramatically reduce traction between wheels and rails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why environmental realism matters in simulators. In one of our projects we spent considerable time tuning <strong>windshield effects in the driver\u2019s cab \u2014 water, dirt, snow, frost, and even cracks<\/strong> \u2014 so that operators experience conditions close to real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And one more engineering detail: in a long train <strong>braking does not start simultaneously in every wagon<\/strong>.
